5-2 Updates ~ 10/30/16

Hello 5-2 Families ~

What a beautiful fall weekend!  I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures - we know they won't be here for very much longer!  And if your family is anything like mine, you were gathered around your TV from 7-10 every night watching the Cubbies hang on in this Series!  C'mon Cubbies!!  Let's do this!

Important Dates

Halloween Party ~ Monday, October 31st at 1:10pm - The kiddos are getting excited for our Halloween celebration tomorrow afternoon!  Our Annual Halloween Parade begins at 1:30pm, with the party immediately following.  It looks like we may have some beautiful weather for the parade ~ yay!  We look forward to seeing you all along the route!  Please refer to the Olive Blog for more information on rain plans, as well as Halloween costume expectations.

Math
My math class will be wrapping up Unit 3 tomorrow, and spending Tuesday and Wednesday reviewing for the Unit 3 math test on Thursday, 11/3.  This is a vocabulary rich unit, please be sure your child is using the available resources to review for the test.  They can review Classifying Quadrilaterals, Analyze and Compare Triangles, and Identifying Attributes of Polygons on LearnZillion, and Properties of Shapes on Khan.  We have also played Polygon Capture and Angle Tangle - these would be great games to play at home to help them prepare for the test!

Science
We focused on learning about the nervous system in our Human Body unit this week.  Ask your child if they can trace the path a message travels through our nervous system, and if they can tell you the difference in the path for reflex and an intentional reaction.  Your children enjoyed themselves as they experiemented with reaction times and reflexes - ask them about the experiments if they haven't already shared!  We ended the week reviewing for the Mid-Unit Assessment on Monday, October 31st

Reading
We started our Nonfiction Unit on Monday, and have been learning about text structures and text features found in different types of nonfiction text.  Your child also chose a biography to read for their upcoming Bio Bottle projects.  The biography should be completed by Friday, 11/4.  Please check in with your child to be sure they are on target.  Information about the Bio Bottles will come home on Friday - just a heads up, your child will need a 2 liter bottle and a styrofoam ball.

Writing
This week, we focused on strong verbs in our writing by brainstorming cooking verbs, then wrote about a sports or action memory using only those verbs.  What creative writers you have!  It was fun listening to them giggle as they tried to find new ways to use these verbs.  We also worked on adding strong verbs in our dialogue this week as we buried the word "said" forever :)  Your creative writers didn't seem to mind as they found plenty of more descriptive words to use in its place!

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a fantastic week ~
