5-2 Updates ~ 10/30/16

Hello 5-2 Families ~

What a beautiful fall weekend!  I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures - we know they won't be here for very much longer!  And if your family is anything like mine, you were gathered around your TV from 7-10 every night watching the Cubbies hang on in this Series!  C'mon Cubbies!!  Let's do this!

Important Dates

Halloween Party ~ Monday, October 31st at 1:10pm - The kiddos are getting excited for our Halloween celebration tomorrow afternoon!  Our Annual Halloween Parade begins at 1:30pm, with the party immediately following.  It looks like we may have some beautiful weather for the parade ~ yay!  We look forward to seeing you all along the route!  Please refer to the Olive Blog for more information on rain plans, as well as Halloween costume expectations.

Math
My math class will be wrapping up Unit 3 tomorrow, and spending Tuesday and Wednesday reviewing for the Unit 3 math test on Thursday, 11/3.  This is a vocabulary rich unit, please be sure your child is using the available resources to review for the test.  They can review Classifying Quadrilaterals, Analyze and Compare Triangles, and Identifying Attributes of Polygons on LearnZillion, and Properties of Shapes on Khan.  We have also played Polygon Capture and Angle Tangle - these would be great games to play at home to help them prepare for the test!

Science
We focused on learning about the nervous system in our Human Body unit this week.  Ask your child if they can trace the path a message travels through our nervous system, and if they can tell you the difference in the path for reflex and an intentional reaction.  Your children enjoyed themselves as they experiemented with reaction times and reflexes - ask them about the experiments if they haven't already shared!  We ended the week reviewing for the Mid-Unit Assessment on Monday, October 31st

Reading
We started our Nonfiction Unit on Monday, and have been learning about text structures and text features found in different types of nonfiction text.  Your child also chose a biography to read for their upcoming Bio Bottle projects.  The biography should be completed by Friday, 11/4.  Please check in with your child to be sure they are on target.  Information about the Bio Bottles will come home on Friday - just a heads up, your child will need a 2 liter bottle and a styrofoam ball.

Writing
This week, we focused on strong verbs in our writing by brainstorming cooking verbs, then wrote about a sports or action memory using only those verbs.  What creative writers you have!  It was fun listening to them giggle as they tried to find new ways to use these verbs.  We also worked on adding strong verbs in our dialogue this week as we buried the word "said" forever :)  Your creative writers didn't seem to mind as they found plenty of more descriptive words to use in its place!

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a fantastic week ~

5-2 Updates ~ 10/23/16

Hello 5-2 Families ~

I hope you had a chance to relax and enjoy some family time weekend....watching the Cubs win the League Championship in one amazing shut out game!  How awesome is it that your children get to see something that over 70 years of Chicagoland kids have not been able to see?!  The Cubs in the World Series!!  Woo-hoo!  To celebrate their win, and to cheer them on in the World Series this week, staff will be wearing Cubs gear the entire week!  We hope to see your kiddos showing their enthusiasm by wearing Cubs colors all week long as well :)

Thank you to all of you who took the time to come out and visit our classroom on Thursday night for Open House!  It was so nice to see all of you, and the students were SO proud to show you around the classroom!
Important Dates

Halloween Party ~ Monday, October 31st at 1:10pm - The kiddos are getting excited for our Halloween celebration on Friday!  Our Annual Halloween Parade begins at 1:30pm, with the party immediately following.  We look forward to seeing you all along the route!  Please refer to the Olive Blog for more information on rain plans, as well as Halloween costume expectations.

Math
My math class began to work on geometric concepts in unit 3 this week.  They were introduced to a new online resource this week - LearnZillion.  They should be working on Classifying and Comparing Quadrangles at home for extra review on polygons.  They will also be working on Khan Academy this unit ~ Properties of Shapes.  There is a great deal of vocabulary with this unit - encourage your child to review these resources often to master these new words!

Science
Your children were able to show off their limb models on Thursday night, hopefully demonstrating to you how muscles work in pairs to pull on bones to make them move. Their models should have not only included muscles and bones, but tendons, which hold the muscles to the bones, and ligaments, which hold the bones together.  Next week we move on to the nervous system with some engaging experiments that text our reaction time and reflexes.  They will review for the mid-unit assessment at the end of this week, and take their test on Monday, October 31st

Reading
We wrapped up our Launching Unit in Reading this week with students doing reflections on themselves as readers.  I continue to meet with the students individually to discuss their reading goals and to have them evaluate their reading notebook using a rubric.  This will be one of the assessment grades for our Launching Unit, and the other will come from their Conversation Checklist. Please remember that the objective of this unit was to establish routines and procedures of a Reading Workshop, and the assessment reflects their effort in the two primary routines - their Reading Notebook and Reading Conversations.

Students took a Nonfiction Unit Pre-test on Friday, and I will use the information to determine the instruction that best suits your child.  The information helps me to determine which concepts your children have already mastered, and which areas they need the greatest instruction.  I will also use the information to determine which students will receive enrichment during this unit.  We begin our Nonfiction Unit on Monday, and will focus on comprehension strategies when reading informational text.  The grades in this unit will reflect their comprehension of nonfiction text.

Target Time
We also began rotating for Target Time this week.  Target Time is a 30 minute block in our afternoon where we have the opportunity to focus on each student's greatest need, and provide additional instruction.  It may be re-teaching or enrichment depending on their needs, but all students will enjoy rich instruction, as well as have the opportunity to experience different classrooms and instructors.

Writing
We returned to our WEX unit this week with a lesson on showing versus telling in our writing.  We had one of our talented students debut her acting abilities in the room as she told us she was happy, then acted out the emotion of happy.  What a difference!  While we all enjoyed quite an entertaining performance, students learned the valuable difference in writing that tells our readers about emotions versus writing that shows readers emotion.  This week, we will focus on showing characters and setting, as well as adding strong verbs to our writing.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a fantastic week ~

5-2 Updates ~ 10/16/16

Hello 5-2 Families ~

Hope you are enjoying our beautiful fall weekend!  GO CUBS!!

Important Dates

Open House ~ Thursday, October 20th at 6:30-8:00pm - please plan to enjoy us for an evening at our annual Open House!  Students have fun showing their parents around the classroom and building, and it's a great chance for a chat :)

Halloween Party ~ Monday, October 31st at 1:10pm - Our Room Moms have been very busy planning an exciting party for your children - a great big thank you to Mrs. Attea, Mrs. D'Amico, and Mrs. Downing for all their hard work!  Please note a few changes for this year's party:

1) Per Dr. Bein's letter, no food will be served at the Halloween party.  Students will enjoy a full afternoon of activities and crafts planned by our room moms.

2) Online Halloween Permission Slip - this year, we will be collecting permission for students to go home for lunch through a Google Doc.  Please click on this link and complete the form for your child BEFORE Monday, 10/24/16.

https://docs.google.com/a/sd25.org/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScODp36-_EcCqAPV8JT00HmAItpKSLojcavz3qBnvlT7dutrw/viewform

3) As you know, we can have 7 volunteers in the classroom this year.  Several of you have let me know you would like to be entered into the drawing to be a volunteer for the party - thank you so much for offering your time!  I will draw the names on Wednesday, 10/19, so if you would still like to get your name in the hat, please email me!

All of you are invited to our Annual Halloween Parade!  The parade route will be the same as last year - we will be walking along Belmont to Thomas, then back to Olive.  We hope to see many of you along the route!  Please refer to the Olive Blog for more information on rain plans, as well as halloween costume expectations.

Math
My math class finished Unit 2 last week with an assessment on Friday.  These tests will be coming home on Monday for a sign and return.  We will pre-test for Unit 3 on Monday, then dive into Geometry concepts on Tuesday.  Students will be measuring angles and classifying geometric shapes in this unit.  They will also be introduced to a new online math resource in this unit - LearnZillion.  Students will be able to log on and watch videos on this site as an additional instructional tool for this geometry unit.

Science
Our study of the human body began this week as we learned about the purpose of our skeletal system, how bones provide structure and protection for our body, and how joints allow us to move.  Ask your child if they remember the three different major types of joints in their body, and the location of each of these joints!  Next week, we will learn how the muscles work in pairs to move the bones, then they will have an opportunity to build models of joints using a variety of supplies in their science teams this week.  While we don't have a unit assessment for a couple of weeks in science, it's important for students to keep up on the vocabulary learned in this unit.  The graphic organizers they complete for each chapter have the most important information and vocabulary for each lesson - have your child continue to review these throughout the unit.

Reading
I was so impressed with the time your children took to produce t-shirts that reflected the novels they chose to review with such detail!  Their individual creativity came through in their brilliant designs, and their excitement for their books came through in their engaging presentations.  The Book Review Fashion Show served to ignite a passion for reading in many students, and increased the excitement in others to have new titles to read.  I've included some pictures below of their fantastic t-shirts ~ they'll be hanging in our room during Open House as well.

We will be wrapping up our Launching Unit this week in reading.  Students have done an amazing job learning the routines and practices for our Reading Workshop, and they have developed such an excitement for reading!  In the Launching Unit, students were exposed to many genres of writing as they established routines, and they spent time this past week reflecting and setting goals for the upcoming weeks in reading.  We will be starting our Nonfiction Unit next week!

Writing
We took a break from our WEX curriculum on Personal Narratives this week and learned to develop strong, descriptive language with a study on poetry this past week.  Students wrote Sensory, Cinquain, and Haiku poems about autumn.  We will finish up our Poetry Unit this week with Diamante and Acrostic poems.  Students will then be able to choose their favorite poem to polish up for final publication this week.  They have been asked to bring in leaves on Wednesday to do a leaf rubbing, so head outside and take a walk with your kiddos to pick up some of those beautiful fall leaves!

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Have a fantastic week ~

5-2 Updates ~ 10/10/16

Hello 5-2 Parents ~

I certainly hope you have enjoyed this long weekend, and the beautiful fall weather!  It was perfect for visiting a pumpkin patch or picking apples :)

We were SO disappointed to have had to cancel the Historical Re-enactment on Thursday!  With the storms predicted for the day, it was just too dangerous to have the kiddos outside.  Unfortunately, we cannot reschedule this event - the actors are all volunteers, and the date is set up well in advance so they can make arrangements to participate.  I did send home the $3.25 bus fee with your child on Friday - if you sent in a check, I sent it back home with your child.  If you sent in cash, I returned cash to you....though many of the students smiled at the thought of putting cash in their pockets.  I reminded them that you knew the money was coming home ;)

Mid-term Grades ~ As you know, midterms were sent home last week for a sign and return.  Thank you for returning them promptly!  Seeing their grades is having the intended impact on many of your children - I am impressed with the motivation I now see in some of the students to change their grades.  Several of you also reached out to discuss your child's grades, and I appreciate the ability to collaborate with you on how to best support your child.  If you ever have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

To reiterate a few important points I shared with some of you via email:
Reading grade - since we are in the Launching unit and establishing routines and behaviors for our Reading Workshop, this grade is primarily made up of behavior grades, not comprehension grades. The scores come from the Reading Notebook Rubric and the Conversation Rubric.  In other words, the grade shows how your child is performing in a Reading Workshop, and not necessarily how well they are comprehending.  With that said, it is important to note that these behaviors are critically important as they move to comprehend the complex 5th grade texts this year.

It is also important to note that the reading grade is comprised of formative assessment grades - these are feedback grades to let the students know how they are performing according to expectations.  I believe it is important to help students understand how they are meeting expectations and how they can improve before we get to the end grade.  They all know they will be scored again at the end of the unit - this will be their summative grade, which will replace their formative score in my grade book.

Important Dates

Service Learning Club ~ Wednesday, October 12th ~ Permission slips for Service Learning Club went home two weeks ago.  This club meets at lunch on every other Wednesday at lunch, sometimes more frequently, to plan activities that support our community.  Some of our past events include planning the Veteran's Day Assembly, fundraiser for the Buddy Foundations, blankets for children in the hospital, and the Fill the Nest food drive.  If you would like your child to participate, and they did not bring home a permission slip, please let me know and I'll send them another one.

Open House ~ Thursday, October 20th at 6:30pm - please plan to enjoy us for an evening at our annual Open House!  Students have fun showing their parents around the classroom and building, and it's a great chance for a chat :)

Math
We continue to work on computation skills in Unit 2 in my math class.  Our Unit 2 Assessment is currently scheduled for Friday, October 14th.  Please continue to encourage your child to log on to Khan Academy to continue practicing adding and subtracting with decimals.  If they've mastered these skills, they can continue to work on their mission to enrich their math skills.  Many of your children also need to improve the automaticity of their multiplication facts.  Please ask your child to log on to Facts Dash via the EverydayMathOnline site for an engaging way to practice their math facts!

Social Studies

We will wrap up our Social Studies unit on Tuesday with the Unit 12 Assessment.  Students were given organizers to study, with the key posted on Edmodo, and I encouraged each of them to take their History Alive books home.  Hopefully, each of them have spent some time this weekend reviewing for the test.

Science
We will begin our Human Body unit this week! The Human Body in Motion Unit gives students a view inside their bodies to see how they move. They discover that movement, like all bodily functions, requires many parts of the body to work together. Students explore the skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems to uncover the specific role each plays in bringing about movement. They come to appreciate the complex intricacies and dependencies between parts of their bodies and learn what they can do to maintain and protect these parts.

Calling all x-rays!!  We start with the skeletal system, and it's always fun to hang up x-rays to aid in our study of bones and joints.  I always hang up x-rays and share stories from my own children's adventures to the ER and orthopedic surgeons, it's just as entertaining and educational to hear all of your stories!

Reading
In our short reading time this week, we practiced writing and sharing excellent Book Reviews - your children are very passionate about what they read and are excited to share reviews with their friends!  I'm impressed with how many were able to "sell" their books to others.  We also spent time reading about the Re-enactment Personas and prepared questions to ask during the Re-enactment.  Next week, we will continue our Launching Unit by focusing on story elements and characters in the fictional stories we read.

Reminder: the Book Review T-shirts are due on Friday, 10/14.  Students should come to school with the actual book and their t-shirts worn over another shirt.  They will wear their t-shirts all day to advertise their books to staff and students - any time someone sees their shirt and wants to know more about that book, they will be stopping your child for a quick Book Talk.  Then, in the afternoon, all of the students will do their Book Talk in front of the class.  Students will leave their t-shirts with me to hang in our room for Open House :)

I have met individually with each of your children to discuss and score their Reading Notebook and the Conversation Observation Checklist over the past couple of weeks.  We have discussed what they are doing well in reading, and specific ways they can improve their notebooks and participation.  I have also shared their reading level with them individually - I've written it on the back of their Reading Notebook Rubric.  Ask your child what their reading level is, or you are always welcome to email me for their level.  Just as a point of reference, 5th graders should be at a level S at the beginning of the year.

Writing
We continued our work on focusing in writing this week - focus on a moment, on a object, on a setting, and even on sounds.  We spend some time this week sitting outside in silence, just listening to the sounds.  As they listened carefully, they recorded the sounds and describing words on their lapboards, then used their notes to write a journal entry when we got back to the classroom.  Your kiddos enjoyed the peaceful moments so much they didn't want to go in!  They asked if we could do it every day - perhaps we'll add some regular meditation to our day :)  Look for pictures below.
