5-2 Updates ~ 02/10/17

Hello 5-2 Parents ~

Thank you for all the well wishes, words of encouragement, and prayers for my son - I truly appreciate being a part of such a loving community!  I will be out of the classroom until Tuesday, February 22nd, but your children will be in good hands!  Mrs. Dunlop, a former 5th grade teacher at Olive, will be in the classroom in my absence - she just loves our class, and the children are super excited she will be taking care of them for a week.  If you have any questions during my absence, please do not hesitate to contact me via email.  I will be home with my son for the week, so I should be able to respond to you in a reasonable amount of time.  Be sure to contact the front office if you have timely information for your child, such as absences, home lunch, or a message for your child - they can get in touch with Mrs. Dunlop.

They did it!!  Your student's excellent behavior earned them a movie in the classroom!!  Woo hoo!!  They chose Are We There Yet?.  The movie is rated PG - here is the link to the Kids in Mind rating of the movie:  http://www.kids-in-mind.com/a/arewethereyet.htm

Because it is a PG movie, our district policy states I need permission from each child's parent before they can view the movie.  Please email me confirmation or concerns.  Thank you!

Your children can bring in a snack for the movie, but it needs to adhere to our school snack policy - fruit or veggies in their own skin.  Thanks!!

Important Dates
Valentine's Day Party ~ Tuesday, February 14th ~ 2:15-3:15pm
Due to severe and life threatening allergies, we are asking that you DO NOT INCLUDE ANY FOOD OR CANDY ITEMS with your child's individual Valentines. There are many clever and creative alternatives to food items, including pencils, tattoos, stickers, & bubbles... but the nicest way to say "Happy Valentine's Day" is to write a nice note!

If you are sending in valentines, please be sure to have your child send in one for every student.  Here is a list of our students for your reference:

Advanced Placement Testing (Math + ALA) ~ April 10th - 13th

Math
We will be wrapping up Unit 7 in math next week and taking the assessment on Friday, 1/17.  We have focused on exponents and powers of 10, order of operations and parenthetical expressions, and positive and negative numbers.  Your child took a Unit 7 quiz today, and was given a printout of the test including their responses and the correct answers.  They can prepare for the assessment by completing any of the challenges on Khan Academy for the topics listed above.  They will be completing a review in class on Thursday as well.

Science
We have been working in our new Earth in Space in science for the past two weeks, exploring the earth's rotation.  They will be completing the 3rd and final cluster for this unit next week - The Sun and Stars.  We will review and take the final assessment the week I return to school.

Reading
We finished our Fiction Unit this week, focusing on how conflict in literature reveals the theme, or message in the story.  Students learned about a variety of different over-arching themes that appear in literature, and how to determine what the text says about the theme.  Finally, we've learned how to connect themes across two different texts.  Next week, they will begin work in the Poetry Unit.  When I return, we will return to review for the Fiction Assessment, with the Fiction Assessment scheduled for Friday, February 24th.

Writing
We've continued our work in the Response to Fiction unit over the past few weeks.  Students are enjoying the engaging story, The Liberation of Gabriel King and will finish it up next week.  They will also continue to learn how to focus on using the text as evidence to support and explain their claims about character traits in a well-written response to fiction essay.

"You will never have this day with your children again.  Tomorrow they will be a little bigger than they are today.  This day is a gift.  Breathe and notice.  Smell and touch them; study their faces and pay attention.  Relish the charms of the present.
Enjoy today.  It will be gone before you know it."
